On June 26th 2025 guests and locals gathered in Nākotne parish to celebrate the operation of the new wastewater treatment plant, installed as one of the actions of the LIFE GoodWater integrated project.

At the opening event, everyone was invited to see the new state-of-the-art wastewater treatment plant in person and learn about its operating principles. One of the project activities was the creation of a 3D prototype of the wastewater treatment plant, which is like a green science classroom. It will be used to raise public awareness of wastewater treatment processes and their impact on the environment. Anyone interested in these technological processes was able to observe how wastewater treatment plants work in this prototype during the event.

The construction of biological wastewater treatment plants and municipal sewerage networks in Nākotne parish is part of the LIFE integrated project “LIFE GoodWater – Implementation of Latvian river basin management plans for good surface water status”. Jelgava Municipality is one of the 19 project partners. The project aims to improve the quality of Latvia’s surface waters in the long term, while also focusing on informing and educating the public about surface water resources. The new, technologically advanced wastewater treatment plants will ensure a high quality wastewater treatment process, preventing environmental pollution and contributing to the improvement of water quality in the Auce River.

The historical wastewater treatment plant in Nākotne, built in 1980, was outdated and did not meet modern requirements, so it was dismantled and replaced with new, modern solutions. The capacity of the new plant – 100 m3/day – was determined based on data on the volumes of drinking water supplied and domestic wastewater discharged. The new treatment plant consists of two BIO-50 process lines. An artificial wetland has also been designed as an innovative element for additional wastewater treatment.

It should be noted that the previous wastewater treatment plant operated by the municipality had not only been treating municipal wastewater from the village for all these years, but also wastewater from an industrial meat processing enterprise. The new the plant only treats domestic wastewater and the company has built their own wastewater treatments facilities.

The total cost of the project for Jelgava Municipality is EUR 194 445, of which EUR 53 668 is financed by the European Commission LIFE Programme, EUR 120 595 by the Ministry of Smart Administration and Regional Development, and the rest by the Jelgava Municipality budget.

The construction project was developed by SIA “Jura Voicehoviča projektēšanas birojs”. Construction works were carried out by SIA “ĢL Konsultants”, supervised by – SIA “Geo Consultants”.
